Norwegian Centre for Microfinance Research

The Norwegian Centre for Microfinance Research (NOCMIR) is a joint initiative between the Kristiansand School of Management at the University of Agder and microfinance actors interested in developing academically based microfinance knowledge. NOCMIR hosted the Third European Research Conference on Microfinance in June, 2013.

As a research centre it is unique since it includes both microfinance practitioners and researchers. The Centre is involved in a broad range of microfinance research projects and cooperates extensively with leading researchers and institutions worldwide.

Alliance Microfinance AS (AMAS) and Strømme Microfinance Ltd are jointly hosting the centre at their joint office in Kristiansand, Norway. NOCMIR was originally founded by the Kristiansand School of Management at the University of Agder in Norway, Alliance Microfinance AS (AMAS) and Strømme Microfinance ltd. Researchers at the Kristiansand School of Management comprise the core of the centre and the Competence Development Fund of Southern Norway provided the initial grant for establishing the centre. NOCMIR is organised as an open initiative and other organisations are welcome to join the Centre as a permanent member or on a project-by-project basis.

The Centre is involved in both self-initiated research and contracted research. All research needs to be academically based and follow academic standards. Additionally, the research output is required to be made publicly available as knowledge sharing and a more extensive flow of information between practitioners and researchers is one of the core objectives of NOCMIR.
